Tips

The competition aims to encourage and recognise excellent written communication among medical undergraduates. Entries will be judged on the following attributes:

  • A clear and concise answer to the question.
  • Relevance to the medical student audience.
  • Style of writing.
  • Originality.
  • By entering each entrant agrees to these terms and conditions.
  • Winning entries may be used in MDU publications. We regret we are unable to offer feedback.

Guidelines

  • The competition is only open to MDU student members enrolled at a UK medical school.
  • Mini essays must be the original work of a single author.
  • You can submit one entry for each question in each judging period.
  • All entries must be submitted separately and you cannot enter the same essay twice.
  • Only entries submitted by email to the published email address and typed in English (no handwritten entries) will be accepted.
  • Entries must be no shorter than 300 words and no longer than 500 words.
  • Your name, school, school year, preferred contact details and essay question must appear on the entry. The word limit does not include your name, school, school year, preferred contact details, essay question or any references.
  • Photos and images may be used but you must have written consent to publish if there is a chance any person(s) may be identified.
  • As the author, you are responsible for obtaining all necessary permissions to adapt or reprint materials from other sources and any fees or associated expenses.

Simply submit a short article (maximum of 500 words) on either of these questions:

Question 1

Who or what inspired you to become a doctor and why? This could be a friend, relative, teacher, someone else, or an experience or situation.

Question 2

If you could go back in time, knowing what you know now, what advice would you give to your fresher self?

Please include your name, school, school year and preferred contact details on your entry.

Competition timings

The current judging period runs until 30 October 2015 (the first period ran until 16 August). Entries received after 30 October will not be accepted.

You can increase your chances of winning by submitting an entry for each question! Please note all entries must be submitted separately.

Judging

Our judges will select a winner for each question. Winners will be notified by email and the competition results will be announced on the MDU website and Facebook page.

Once the winners have been announced, student members will have the chance to vote for their favourite and an overall winner will be announced on 27 November 2015.
